Embrace the camera

{Embrace the camera}

There is only so much squealing, giggling, tickling and play fighting that can go on in one day right!..... She sure can sing at the top of her lungs, talk a mile a minute, laugh uproariously and ...yep...she really does make me laugh.

If I knew I could, I would....

On Fridays around these parts we have a little tradition. We throw caution (editing, revising, and worrying) to the winds and just write. Without wondering if it’s just right or not. For five minutes flat. You’re welcome to play along. Today's prompt is, 'If I knew I could, I would...' The rules are easy. Linking up with the gypsy mama.

If I knew I could I would pack the kids up for a trip around the world and take them places they have only dreamed of. We would do all the fun stuff like visiting Disneyland in Paris, or riding an elephant in India and chomping our way through spaghetti and gelati in Italy. Oh how fun this would be...but....more than that I would love to show them the richness of life, the wonderful and also heartbreaking places and a strong and resilient people....so that their eyes might be open.....to perhaps gain perspective.... or shift focus. I would want them to see for themselves that life is not the sum of what you have but rather the sum of what you have to give....that purpose, significance and destiny is reaching out rather than reaching in.

True beauty...the light within.

I am currently on a journey with my fifteen year old daughter to discover her true beauty. (It is an ongoing one!) In a media saturated world of unrealistic body images and body touch ups, developing a healthy self esteem and positive internal framework has been at the forefront of my mind. Trying to strike a balance between the fantasy of the fashion world and the reality of her actual world has been somewhat of a challenge. Body image has been a big issue for us as we navigate healthy body perspectives! The voice of a mother is somewhat drowned out by peer opinions, media images and the impending world views. Telling her that true beauty has more to do with the condition of the heart and soul rather than developing the persona's of a glamour gal, fashionista or bo - ho rock chick has been an ongoing process. Eyeliner, lip gloss and bronzer are a girls best friend right now.

The creativity of the blank canvas (aka the face) has been a fascinating discovery {yes...her words, not mine!} All this external exploration has been a whole 'nother' world, for me and her. Trying to hold her back has been like keeping a bull from a red flag. Impossible, I know!! I am not opposed to a little experimentation as long as the focus is more than just skin deep. We are still working towards this end and revealing the true beauty from within.

'You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen. But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soul's own doing.' - Marie Stopes

I love this quote because it suggests that true beauty is something defined deep within the soul. It is not the fleeting beauty of youth but rather the unfathomable beauty of a tender heart, compassionate soul and a gracious spirit. It is the gentle unfolding of a magnificent and resplendent refinement that slowly unravels over time. Beauty is defined as - having qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction, delighting the senses or mind. Synonyms associated with this word include one being - fascinating, magnificent, resplendent, statuesque and excellent. It is my belief that these qualities refer to the inside of who you are. That great big smiling soul.

'People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out. But when the darkness sets in there true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.' - Elizabeth Kuber - Ross

'My daughter -
You are beautiful
not because your tall or thin or lithe
nor because your hair is flat or smooth
or if a smile is wide and even.

You are beautiful
because your heart is true
your soul is open
and the core of who you are is
sweet and kind and good.'

'Your beauty was perfected because of My splendor which I bestowed on you.' Ezekiel 16:14

'True beauty is a light that shines from within that touches the world with a warmth that illuminates the heart and ignites the soul in a tangible and welcome embrace.' - Kay Weight

Embracing the camera - with my son

My daughter took these photos Easter Monday and oh how I love them.
My son and I ... so deep in conversation - heart to heart.
This boy makes my heart glad, his gentle soul is healing balm.

I love you my son, always will.
I love you more than all the stars in the sky.
I see the man you will become, smart, caring and kind.

So full of wild dreams and crazy ideas.
So much potential inside of you, all bottled up,
busting to break free.

I watch you build, design and create
and stand amazed at this life that given to me.
How did I get so lucky? So blessed to raise this life,
this sweet gift from heaven.

I watch you grow and think about the man you will be some day.
Sometimes the hard decisions I have to make are beyond me.
The tough calls that require me to shape you into that man
are sometimes really hard to make son.
But, I make them because of you.

Because I see the man you will one day be.
I'm proud of that man, proud of who you will be.
I love you son.

There will be tough times ahead, some maybe unexpected.
Anything of value is worth fighting for, so fight hard son.
Don't quit, don't give up, ever!

You were born for this time, a time full of hope and promise.
You are that hope, shining ever bright, a city on a hill.
The whispers of times past push you, pressing you always forward,
the voice of purpose sings aloud, listen to her song son.

You have what it takes son, trust your heart my beautiful boy.
It is your guiding light, your compass, let it always direct you home.
Trust your heart son, nothing makes me more proud.

I  love you son.

A Soul Soiree

Acholi Mother and baby

Lately I have been getting a little creative and even started an art blog. It has been years since I got really serious about drawing and finding the time was just a whole 'nother' issue. Having come back from Uganda at the end of last year I wondered how I could continue to tell the story of Uganda and its people and at the same time use what was in my hand!
-----------------------------------------------
and so after a bit of sketching one day
(very thankful for holidays!)
a 'Soul Soiree' was born.

A soul soiree is a gathering of creative potential, it is an intentional and significant message wrapped in creative form. It is an artistic story of the magnificence (and the vulnerable moments) of life woven into a delightful tapestry of colour, light, vibrancy and delight.  My heart was ‘forever changed’ when I heard the story of the child soldiers in Uganda. In 2010 I visited Uganda and embraced the abandoned, abducted and rejected women and children of a rebel war. I was inspired to create artwork that tells a story for the lost, the captive, the broken hearted, the suffering, the hurting and alone. It is a message and mandate full of purpose and destiny.

For freedom

'Humanities freedom requires sacrifice' ... These were the words that penetrated my heart today.

It made me think ... freedom can only be experienced through the release or relinquish of something - release from bondage, imprisonment or captivity; through the relinquish of fear, doubt and unbelief. A sacrifice requires  the offering up of something and a total surrender so freedom can be qualified. Restitution and redemption is given. This kind of exchange usually involves great personal cost, perhaps distress for another ... personal suffering ... or the facing of adversity on behalf of the captive, the lost and alone. It is given, exchanged and exacted because of a solid, firm and unyielding love ...
The hard love - a love beyond comprehension.

Let us remember this Easter weekend -
It was for freedom that we have been set free.
